Boys Alone Essay Example for Free

Young men Alone Essay A narrative spotlights on and questions real individuals and occasions, regularly in a social setting, in this manner putting the crowd in a situation to shape a supposition about whom or what we are seeing. They are engaging, convincing and inciting us and basically center around one subject. There are numerous kinds of narratives, they incorporate reportage: The young lady whos skin tumbled off. Reality: Big sibling. Institutional: Jamies school meals Docudramas: Supernanny Docusoaps: straightforward life and Nature: Big feline week Each narrative has similar codes and shows, they are on the whole genuine, reality, instructive, demonstrate a point, incorporate relevant data and they all have a storyteller or a moderator. Narratives have changed after some time, they go back to the early newsreels and early movies the same number of the primary movies were short real pieces consistently life. With the flare-up of the first world war narratives went in a new direction by being utilized as promulgation. Imaginative narratives started to create after the war, sensational substance was pulled from realities and data. These kinds of narratives are like the narratives that we know and watch today. Young men alone is a docudrama narrative, it consolidates components of narrative and dramatization, somewhat demonstrating genuine occasions. It is a narrative of an English social test in which 10 eleven-year old young men are welcome to be home alone without grown-up oversight for seven days in a rural house. The film tests the regular conviction that a pack of young men went out for an extensive stretch of time, will fall to pieces, like Lord of the Flies. The narrative opens with the camera demonstrating the house where the young men will remain, it utilized methods that show the serenity and cleanliness of the house before the young men show up, for example, a low point show to make the house look huge, and a moderate panning shot to plant the smoothness. The storyteller acquaints us with the program and what it is about, he sets up the story. For instance, he says The camera men will just advance in instances of wellbeing and security and that the young men have all had a serious emergency treatment and cooking course and that they can ring a councilor that they have met before the show at whenever. This is logical data. The storyteller additionally starts to acquaint us with a portion of the characters so we can start to tail them on their excursion. This makes us need to watch on, the storyteller says that George was first to snap a photo and that Daniel got the greatest water gun. This makes us need to perceive any reason why they did, and what there characters resemble. The camera edges are successful in the initial scene, when the young men go into the house there is a since quite a while ago shot and looking down. The young men are surrounded by the entryway, this in a way shows that they are little yet it appears there significance. This makes us need to watch and see all of there characters. The camera is hand held and starts to follow a portion of the young men ways of decimation around the house. There is a viable camera point/shot that is utilized when sim is at the table having supper alone. The camera is toward the finish of the long table creation it look longer and underlining the way that sim is all alone. The camera likewise does 3 straight cuts of Sim all alone, each time there is a period at the base of scene, this causes us to feel like sim is consistently all alone. This causes us to feel sorry for him and need to watch on. Damilola is a reportage narrative; it gives us what occurs in the public arena. We converse with those included and the observers. They show the story, rather than us recounting to the story like in the news. The narrative reveals to us the story and gives us what happened to Damilola Taylor, the multi year old Nigerian conceived kid, who was fiercely killed without hesitating not well before he came to England. This narrative is focused on each and every individual who has known about the homicide or individuals who need to discover what occurred, and why nobody had been charged. The narrative opens with Damilolas guardians, instructors and companions discussing him and offering there thoughts. You are given a prologue to his character, you see home video clasps of him looking glad and having a great time. They state that he is a Jumpy, jittery kid and that he needed to learn at school The utilization of handheld cameras are compelling, they are home recordings of him, moving and playing with companions to strengthen the way that he is a youthful, upbeat and guiltless kid. The initial scene attracts us to it and causes us to feel sorry for him, we need to discover why he passed on, and why there was no equity. The camera points, for example, a mid shot and panning shot of the flight of stairs where Damilola was slaughtered and his folks were incorporated to cause us to feel compassion and draw in crowd consideration. The storyteller, a Caucasian male in his 30s, gives the crowd a human figure to identify with. He gives us loads of data about Damilola being a flawless kid and afterward gruffly discloses to us that he was murdered and there was no equity. This draws in us to the narrative and makes us need to watch on. The narrative creator illustrates Damilolas life, by continually remarking on how he was such a decent kid speedy to make companions, his father was supposed to be a regarded middleclass man who works for the administration in Nigeria. Damilolas farther said that Damilola longed for coming to England and college, and that his farther didnt need him to go. This makes us pulled in and need to watch on as it makes us need to find out about what his life may have been similar to or why he was murdered. The music is unpleasant and scary, and the altering incorporates cuts between Damilola glad in Nigeria and the homicide scene in Peckham, these are two codes and shows of a narrative that draw in the crowd consideration. The initial scenes of the two narratives are unique, however similar in a couple of ways. The two of them have an a storyteller. Damilola has a storyteller, yet young men alone has portrayal, where you don't see the individual portrayal, you don't have a human figure to identify with. Young men alone opens with the storyteller educating the crowd regarding the program and illuminating them, where as Damilola has an a lot more grounded opening, it goes straight into conversing with his parent and companions, and the storyteller acquaints us with Damilola step by step after that. The Damilola opening doesn't have to utilize surrounding of handheld cameras to make intrigue. The crowd have decided to watch the narrative to discover all the more so they are as of now intrigued. This is a differentiation to the Boys alone narrative, the title isn't as plain as day as Damilola Taylor so it is in the opening of the narrative a great deal of data about what they are going to see is required, however not all that a lot to part with everything and make the watcher not have any desire to watch on. In a narrative it is one thing to draw in a crowds consideration, however to support it is much harder. A blend of altering, music, portrayal, story line and logical data is expected to keep a crowd of people viewing. In Boys alone the crowd consideration was supported by utilizing the responses of the characters, the progression of the story line, the portrayal and the great camera points. From the earliest starting point of the narrative a story line started to frame, the young men immediately acquainted themselves and we started with see the more grounded and more fragile young men, genuinely and intellectually, become isolated. In any gathering of young men, wild chains of command will rapidly frame. The most grounded and most confident will endure; the most delicate and defenseless will endure. The young men choose George as a pioneer and the camera starts to follow the more vulnerable young men on an enthusiastic fight against there peers. Utilizing sharp camera edges and altering Sim is depicted as the tranquil and less decisive one. For instance the young men pick on him and state that he isnt accomplishing any house work, so he does the cleaning up, yet he does it two evenings in succession. The altering is successful now as it shows us sim doing the washing and afterward straight slices to different young men having a fabulous time and afterward back to him an hour later despite everything doing the cleaning up. The storyteller advises us regarding the time that he is remaining at the sink. The storyteller is again in the wake of depicting sim as the pariah, viable. He causes us to feel like there is war seething between the two gatherings of young men in the house that have been framed. The tranquil young men and the uproarious young men who appear to administer the house. He makes us need to watch on a there is a war creating, he depicts the young men as crazy, he says the young men choose to play a round of chase the hedgehog, the camera men choose to intercede. And furthermore this is a combat area and war has been announced between the two rooms this is powerful as it makes us need to watch on and perceive how the battling and contentions create, and whether the young men settle it or not. Precipice holders are utilized viably in this narrative. At the point when the storyteller says war has been pronounced between the two rooms it at that point slices to the break. This attracts us and makes us need to watch on, at that point there is a break and it makes us continue watching and prevents us from turning over. This is continuing our consideration. Following seven days together, when the examination is done, they come back to their folks who are skeptical at what occurred. The house has been destroyed and the young men are genuinely and sincerely depleted. The young men appear to be glad for what they have done the house, yet the guardians are stunned. The camera has many close ups of guardians response to what their youngster got up to, this continues our data right to the end. In the Damilola narrative there is a great deal of repetitive topics, the storyteller accentuates on how guiltless and kind he was, and an image of damilola in his school uniform comes up on the camera consistently, likewise another on the off chance that him is indicated a couple of times, the image is taken at a high point shot and this underlines the way that he is little and blameless. After every one of those photos is appear, the screen is blurred to dark to show that he isn't there any longer. This is ver

Blu-beam Vs HD-DVD - Essay Example DVD or 'Advanced Versatile Disk' or 'Computerized Video Disk' has been round the corner for a long time now, however Blu-beam is a generally more up to date procedure. With the appearance of each new strategy, a discussion begins occurring whether the prompt forerunner has carried on with its helpful life or not. Comparable discussion is occurring in the IT business with appearance of Blu-beam stockpiling gadget. Propelled form of DVD is known as HD-DVD. This High Definition DVD or High Density DVD has more stockpiling than an ordinary DVD. Be that as it may, with the appearance of Blu-beam question marks are being raised on its helpful life too. Actually there's parcel more to these kinds of discussions, other than innovative issues. Presently in the market driven economies, the more current renditions of any item/innovation are being belittled by some huge corporate house, in this way mechanical contention takes a focal stage on such issues. Comparable is the situation of Blu-beam Vs HD-DVD. Blu-beam innovation created by Sony and others has begun gathering support from organizations like Phillips, while Toshiba is proceeding with more up to date tests in the HD-DVD arrangement. As consistently happens customer happens to be a definitive recipient of this relentless rivalry. Indeed the speed of progress in innovation is so quick and enraged that while from one viewpoint the HD-DVD, presented in 1997, is as yet being explored different avenues regarding for more stockpiling, the Blue-beam Disk (BD) has shown up with a blast. What direction to go The name Blu-beam is in truth a blend of 'blue', for the shade of the laser that is utilized, and 'beam', for the optical beam. It is advantageous here to make reference to that the previous circle recorders, perusers utilize red laser beam. The letter e in blue was deliberately left off, as indicated by the gathering of producers, as an ordinary word can't be trademarked, along these lines Blu-beam was conceived. Blu-beam Disk (BD), a cutting edge optical circle design is mutually evolved by the Blu-beam Disk Association (BDA), a gathering of the world's driving customer gadgets, PC and media makers (counting Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). This report is planned to introduce the exploratory and investigative parts of wine science with center around fining specialists. By testing these fining operators on wine tests, their general viability will be watched and examined as for pH, Turbidity, Sediment level etc. This will help reach a legitimate determination concerning the fining specialist that has the best explanation consequences for the tried wines and to what degree. 2. 0-Introduction: The antiquated procedure of winemaking has charmed the human civilisation for a huge number of years. Archeological discoveries have demonstrated that the most punctual creation of wine ca n be followed back to 8000BC in the area of advanced Georgia, Iran and Armenia (Merveonur, M. 2011). From that point forward the craft of vinification has been consistently obvious since the beginning with its hugeness featured in a large number of the world’s most prominent cultures.Take for instance the old Egyptians of third centuries BC that pre-owned wine for sacrosanct functions or the antiquated Greeks that generally directed conferences (social gatherings) by savoring wine enormous gatherings (Biers, W. 1980). All through the ages wine has undoubtabley been esteemed for its hugeness in the public eye, culture and even religion, with its significance still pervasive in the advanced world. In Australia, the exportation of wine right now contributes an amazing $6 billion dollars to the nation’s economy (Adams, P. 2005).In actuality, Australia is perceived as the fourth biggest exporter of wine on the planet. The country’s eight constitutive expresses all ec onomically produce wine of high caliber with vineyards possessing around 160,000 hectares all through Australia (Wine Australia, 2010). States, for example, Victoria and South Australia are globally prestigious for delivering exceptionally choice wines that experience the best vinification. The way toward delivering wine is one that includes incalculable methods and requires an intensive logical comprehension alluded to as Oenology.Oenology is the advanced investigation of winemaking incorporating everything from the underlying natural product development to the broad science behind the whole procedure (Boulton, R. 1996). Vinification at last comprises of numerous biochemical procedures that must be deliberately observed and controlled to guarantee achievement. The essential substance process associated with any wine is the underlying maturation which is answerable for the arrangement of ethanol. During this stage, normal organic product sugars, for example, glucose and fructose are changed over to liquor through anaerobic yeast breath (Fugelsang, C. 1997).Ultimately, the yeast which are facultative parasitic life forms give compounds that separate sugar particles while discharging Ethanol and Carbon Dioxide as side-effects through the exothermic response: C6H1206 â€>2CH3CH2OH + 2CO2 + 115kj/mol. Winemakers will as a rule stop the aging procedure once an ideal liquor level is accomplished anyway the maturation can normally stop in the wake of arriving at a specific degree of liquor that in this way gets poisonous to the yeast consequently executing them (Smith, D. 2009). When aging is finished, numerous wines may show indications of turbidity or cloudiness. This is because of suspended particulates, for example, proteins, tannins, phenols or dead yeast cells that cause dimness in wine when not expelled. These particles can hasten out of the wine normally affected by gravity anyway this is an extensive procedure and those that need quick outcomes depend on substance explanation. Synthetic compounds with the end goal of wine explanation are known as fining or flocculation specialists and are broadly utilized in the wine business. These specialists are normally gotten from Earths, Proteins, Carbons, Synthetic polymers, Polysaccharides and different substances (Zoecklein, B. 988). It is critical that a business wine be freed from any suspended contaminations so it bids to the purchaser. Fining operators for the most part explain the wine in three unique strategies including electrostatic fascination, ingestion or enzymatic separate (Main, M. 1995). The most widely recognized technique anyway is through electrostatic fascination as this is shown by most of fining specialists. Hypothetically the suspended particles in wine all convey a relating electrical charge along these lines by dding a fining operator of the contrary charge the particles adsorb to the outside of the fining atom shaping substantial bunches (allude to addendum figure 1 ). The clusters quickly sink to the base because of their high thickness comparative with that of the wine (Guerra, B. 2008). Eventually, three fining specialists were chosen as guineas pigs for the investigation that should have been led. These specialists include: Bentonite which is aluminum phyllosilicate earth with a negative charge, Isinglass; a collagen got from fish that conveys a positive charge and Kieselsol/gelatine which is a fining operator using both a positive and negative charge. 3. 0-Aim:The general point of this logical examination is to evaluate the effectiveness and explanation abilities of three distinction fining specialists including; Bentonite, Isinglass and Kieselsol/Gelatine. The outcomes acquired from the wines treated with fining operators will be differentiated to those got from the wine without the nearness of a fining specialist. This will show any patterns in the information with respect to which fining operator is generally proficient and if there is an incredible distinction between the pace of explanation of the wines subject to compound fining rather than the wine subject to characteristic explanation affected by gravity alone.By testing parameters, for example, Ph, Turbidity, Sediment level, Alcohol content and Electrical conductivity a few connections between the outcomes acquired and factors will be examined to legitimize the productivity of the flocculation specialists. 4. 0-Hypothesis: It can be theorized that every one of the three fining operators will have observably various consequences for the wine lucidity. The ‘Kwik Clear’ operator is anticipated to display the best effect on explanation as it contains both Kieselsol and Gelatine which are specialists of inverse charges. This will speculatively make more remains as the negative and positive charges together will thusly draw in increasingly suspended particulates of either electrostatic charge. Then again, the adversely charged Bentonite operator is add itionally expected to show gigantic fining limit because of its extraordinary sub-atomic surface territory that will provoke the adsorption of high measures of decidedly charged particles. The Isinglass operator is at last expected to perform less alluringly for what it's worth ordinarily a sensitive, emphatically accused specialist of frail fining capacities because of it delicate sub-atomic structure. Finally, the wine without the nearness of fining specialists (the control), will undoubtabley show the least acceptable outcomes as far as explanation. Some sedimentation may happen because of the characteristic effect of gravity anyway this will be constrained and generously less in contrast with the wine treated with fining specialists. 5. 0-Safety Analysis Due to the subject of this evaluation (wine making), the research facility has been utilized broadly for about all parts of this task including the making of wine and testing. Security safeguards should thusly be practiced togeth er with exacting lab decorum to forestall risks arising.Students must recall consistently to comply with the principles which include: 1. Leading one’s self reasonably and capably at record-breaking particularly when taking care of synthetic compounds of intense nature. 2. No nourishment or beverages to be brought into the research center to forestall the chance of sullying with destructive substances. 3. Long hair must be solidly attached back to diminish the danger of introduction to destructive synthetic compounds (or the danger of polluting the wine). 4. Wellbeing goggles, covers, sterile jackets and gloves ought to be worn consistently to limit the danger of body introduction to synthetic concoctions particularly the eyes. . Every trial guidance must be perused and seen definitely before directing the analysis. 6. Sitting on the research facility seats is precluded. 7. Sitting on seats while performing compound investigations is illegal. 8. The names of synthetic substan ces used should consistently be perused with the goal that one knows about the dangers and nature of the specific concoction. 9. Outrageous alert must be taken when dealing with glass device to guarantee no breakage. 10. Any breakage or compound spills must be promptly answered to the educator with the goal that the hazard might be immediately contained. 11.Carrying synthetics or glass over the room isn't fitting and conveys an incredible level of hazard. 12. The three leadership styles were democratic, laissez-faire, and autocratic (Burnes, B., Cooke, B. (2013). Kurt Lewin, and a team of researchers, studied youth leaders. They studied youth leaders in activity groups. Based on those studies, it was concluded that there were three obvious and leading leadership styles. In the novel, the Igbo ask how the white man can call Igbo customs bad when he does not even speak the Igbo language. An understanding of Igbo culture can only be possible when the outsider can relate to the Igbo language and terminology. Achebe solves this problem by incorporating elements of the Igbo language into his novel. The Igbo culture is fundamentally an oral one — that is, Among the Igbo, the art of conversation is regarded very highly, and proverbs are the palm-oil with which words are eaten (Chapter1). To provide an authentic feel for Igbo culture would be impossible without also allowing the proverbs to play a significant role in the novel. And despite the foreign origin of these proverbs and tales, the Western reader can relate very well to many of them. They are woven smoothly into their context and require only occasional explanation or elaboration. These proverbs and tales are, in fact, quite similar in spirit to Western sayings and fables. Modern-day readers of this novel not only relate easily to traditional proverbs and tales but also sympathize with the problems of Okonkwo, Nwoye, and other characters. Achebe has skillfully developed his characters, and even though they live in a different era and a very different culture, one can readily understand their motivations and their feelings because they are universal and timeless. Speech patterns and rhythms are occasionally used to represent moments of high emotion and tension. Consider the sound of the drums in the night in Chapter 13 (go-di-di-go-go-di-go); the call repeated several times to unite a gathering followed by its group response, first described in Chapter 2 (Umuofia kwenu. . .Yaa!); the agonized call of theShow MoreRelatedThings Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe1415 Words   |  6 Pagesbook Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe does just that. Position Paper free essay sample

Purpose The purpose of this statement is to express my position in regards to the ongoing issue in America of childhood obesity and whether or not parents are to blame for this ongoing trend. Statement of Position As a nurse, I take the position that parents are to be blamed for childhood obesity and it is our nation’s responsibility, particularly as healthcare workers, to educate parents and children so that we can decrease and eventually eliminate obesity in America. History/Previous Position Statements The ANA is on board to support First Lady Obama in her stance against childhood obesity. The ANA also believes that if childhood obesity is not forcefully acted upon, American children will lead a life that is much shorter than any American generation to date. The ANA believes that parents as well as healthcare workers are the first to see the effects of obesity in children and these two groups collaboratively should be able to motivate children to be healthy (American Nurses Association, 2010). Students are responsible for doing their own work and avoiding all forms of academic dishonesty. All students are expected to be honest in university environment. Integrity in ethic means honesty or accuracy of ones actions. She was untruthfulness to herself because she used the test as unauthorized material. She did not want to accept the fact that she was cheating on the exam. She struggled to herself at first whether used the essay question as a sort of study guide. But, finally, she failed to keep up with responsibility to be honest and did inaccuracy action. Others may argue that Lucy did not violate policy because she did not look for the test on purpose, Lucy realized that she was starring at Tom Sanders midterm exam for introduction to American Politics. And she prevented from going further when she realized that is actual test; once Lucy realized the nature of the document she was holding in her hand, she immediately put it facedown on the table next to her in order to keep from seeing questions on the multiple- choice section of the exam. Moreover, professor used the same exam of proof. Jackson from last year which many students knew those materials. Therefore, the action, which Lucy did, would not be called cheating. In my point of view, if Lucy was not cheat on the test, why would she have had to e the Honor council to turn herself in?She went there because she felt ashamed about what she did. Also, she asked for leniency in her case so that she could feel relieve. In conclusion, although Lucy was not completely view all the content of the exam and even turned herself in Honor council, she has already violated policy from the beginning. She failed to keep her truthfulness to the same. Lucy is just one of example about violating honesty policy cases. But at lease, she knew that she was wrong and felt ashamed about her inaccuracy act.Cheating is a big issue that universities care about. Controlled Environment Essays - , Term Papers

Controlled Environment What controlled environment did you spend time in? How long? When I graduated from High School I entered into the Merchant Marine Academy at Fort Schuyler in New York. From then until I was in my mid thirties I was involved with ocean liners, tankers and ships. For periods of one year at a time I would be on a ship traveling the world, making shipments and patrolling the seas. The controlled environment was both on the ship and in the academy. Once on the ship I had to obey the rules and morals taught to us in the academy. Was there an effort to separate you from your former identity? No not really. Contrary to the NAVY, ARMY or Marines our boot camp was less severe and did not include such physical conditioning. Our personalities were not changed because we were not in combat and did not have to learn to be a killing machine. What were the most important rules you had to follow? Besides not falling in the water, we had to obey almost everything our captain told us. Our captain was like our parents his wishes were our commands. The captain set the standards and the rules for us to follow. What were the least and less important rules you had to follow? There was a uniform but it was not very important that we followed it. As an officer we had to look respectable but usually the uniform requirements were not met. We also had a curfew but that was rarely followed and it was rare for a person to get into any trouble for breaking curfew. What were some of the make-dos the inmates made up for their deprivations with? Since there was no T.V. almost every night after dinner we held chess and checkers tournament. The games were fast paced and mostly just for fun, no money was ever wagered. We also drank a lot of beer when we were at sea for extended amounts of time. Which were accepted by the authorities and which were not? Well the chess tournaments everyone enjoyed and were accepted by all, officers, Plebes and Captains. However drinking and other drug use was prohibited. Being caught with illegal drugs meant immediate dismissal from the corps. Being caught with alcohol meant some kind of military punishment(I never got caught). How did the inmates respond to their situation? Almost everyone on the ship enjoyed their work and being away from home. However after long periods, occasionally fights would arise and officers would end up with a black eye or broken nose. But on a whole it was usually pretty peaceful and an enjoyable environment. Do you consider your experience in the controlled environment beneficial? Absolutely, it taught me discipline and how to treat others. My experience also taught me to value what I have at home and didnt have when at sea. Do you miss the environment? When my kids are bothering me I miss the solitude of the open ocean. However, at the same time I have also had my fill of that lifestyle. Would you do it again? In a heartbeat. The person whom I interviewed is a very close family friend who entered in to the Merchant Marine Academy at the age of 18. I also interviewed another friend who was in the army and fought in Vietnam. Many of his answers coincided with those of Owen(from the merchant marines). Mikes experiences in the ARMY were a little more structured than Owens. But Mikes experience was not as enjoyable or beneficial. The benefits received from the ARMY were discipline and respect. As a sailor Owen also benefitted by seeing the world and experiencing many cultures while being in a controlled environment. Mike portrayed the ARMY to be a very structured environment, where everything that a soldier did was monitored and taken into account. The rules he had to follow were very distinct and if broken meant physical punishments (push-ups etc.). The ARMYs rules based around the constitution and defending our Nation. The Merchant Marine rules based around the safety of their officers and the good being tra nsported. Finally, contrary to Owens experiences Mikes, made an effort to separate him from his identity. Mike was reshaped from an average man to a killing machine. Through

Marine Herbivores

Marine Herbivores An herbivore is an organism that feeds on plants. These organisms are referred to as herbivorous. An example of a marine herbivore is the manatee. The opposite of an herbivore is a carnivore or meat-eater. Origin of the Term Herbivore The word herbivorous comes from the Latin word herba (a plant) and vorare (devour, swallow), meaning plant-eating. Size Matters Many marine herbivores are small because only a few organisms are adapted well enough to eat phytoplankton, which provides the bulk of the plants in the ocean. Terrestrial herbivores tend to be larger since most of the terrestrial plants are large and can sustain a large herbivore. Two exceptions are manatees and dugongs, large marine mammals who survive primarily on aquatic plants. However, they live in relatively shallow areas, where light is not limited and plants can grow larger.   Advantages and Disadvantages of Being An Herbivore Plants such as phytoplankton are relatively abundant in ocean areas with access to sunlight, such as shallow waters, at the surface of the open ocean, and along the coast. So an advantage of being an herbivore is that food is pretty easy to find. Once it is found, it cant escape like a live animal could. On the disadvantage side, plants are more difficult to digest and more may be needed to provide adequate energy for the herbivore.    Examples of Marine Herbivores Many marine animals are omnivores or carnivores. But there are some marine herbivores that are wells of marine herbivores in various animal groups are listed below. Herbivorous Marine Reptiles: Green sea turtle (who are named for their green fat, which is green because of their plant-based diet)Marine iguanas Herbivorous Marine Mammals: Manatees, as already mentioned above.Dugongs Herbivorous Fish Many tropical reef fish are herbivores. Examples include:   ParrotfishAngelfishTangsBlennies These coral reef herbivores are important to maintaining a healthy balance in a reef ecosystem. Algae can dominate and smother a reef if herbivorous fish arent present to help balance things out by grazing on the algae.  Fish can break down the algae using a gizzard-like stomach, chemicals in their stomach and intestinal microbes. Herbivorous Invertebrates Some gastropods, such as limpets, periwinkles  (e.g., the common periwinkle), and queen conchs. Herbivorous Plankton Some zooplankton species Herbivores and Trophic Levels Trophic levels are the levels at which animals feed. Within these levels, there are producers (autotrophs) and consumers (heterotrophs).   Autotrophs make their own food, while heterotrophs eat autotrophs or other heterotrophs. In a food chain or food pyramid, the first trophic level belongs to the autotrophs. Examples of autotrophs in the marine environment are marine algae and seagrasses. These organisms make their own food during photosynthesis, which uses energy from the sunlight. Herbivores are found at the second level. These are heterotrophs because they eat the producers. After herbivores, carnivores and omnivores are at the next trophic level, since carnivores eat herbivores, and omnivores eat both herbivores and producers. The Globalization of the Food System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Globalization of the Food System - Essay Example The majority of the countries around the globe appear to be headed in a similar direction in terms of globalization of food (Inglis and Gimlin 110). There are different circumstances that affect the food security of different nations and in different ratios. Their impacts on the populations health also differ greatly. Many new countries are currently joining the process as a result of the fiscal and political reforms in their countries. These include nations such as South Africa, India, Columbia and many more around the globe (Ronald, 75). For example, the Colombian government eliminated tariffs on imports, which led to an increase in the nation’s imports. These imports have in turn impacted the livestock sector positively since their livestock always have enough food to eat. Since the year 1990, the supply along with the demand of food has been changing gradually. This has brought about the sprout and expansion of supermarkets across the globe, so as to supply the demands of consumers. The demand for food is increasing due to the increase in cases of urbanization around the globe along with the ease of accessibility of refrigeration facilities. The supply of food across the globe has greatly been advanced as a result of more freedoms in the market, investments from foreign nations and improvements made in technology (Behnassi, Draggan and Sanni 67). Urbanization has caused changes in the eating habits of the people along with changes in their health. By the year 2001, about 48% of the world’s population was living in urban areas, which included 76% of the people in first world countries. It is also estimated that 40% of the populations living in third world countries live in urban centers. Research from different scholars suggests that people excessively flock to urban centers due to poverty and the need to feed their families. This leads the urban centers becoming centers of scarcity since food and other resources are limited. Other researchers suggest that excessive poverty in the rural areas causes people to migrate to urban areas to have better living standards. The food situation in developing nations has worsened, and this is due to the fact that there is inequality in the trading opportunities countries get. The food situation in many developing nations is also adversely being affected by various issues. These issues include the dumping of exports in these countries by developed nations, the lack of subsidies by their governments on agricultural activities and the use of tariffs, which are unfair. Most agriculturally productive areas in the rural areas have also been destroyed thus endangering the peoples food security. This in turn reduces the people’s returns from agricultural activities (Behnassi, Draggan and Sanni123). Changes in the dietary habits of the people living in urban areas leads to poor health and nutrition among them. Previous studies carried out suggest that countries with most people living i n urban areas have greater GDP’s than those with fewer people. These issues also affect the mortality rate among the infants in a nation. Countries having greater GDP’s tend to experience greater communal and fiscal inequalities (Vaidya 157). Globalization of the food system has brought changes to the people’s diet. This has been influenced by the changes in the people’s incomes and the prices charged for the products. The prices and incomes of the people influence the availability and delivery

Advertisement on coffee at Starbucks Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Advertisement on coffee at Starbucks - Essay Example The advertisement is very plain in terms of creating attention and the words used appear as a command rather than a request or soft words to attract the target. The main aims of any advertiser are to create a good impression to a potential customer, make them their customer and retain them. To achieve these goals, they interact with the social world and are often faced by many social issues that create challenges as well as hindrances. The most pressing social issue is stereotyping by customers. Different customers have varying perceptions over advertisements, and this affects their effectiveness. Advertisers, therefore, face the challenge of designing an advertisement that will receive less criticism and achieve its aim. The picture in the advertisement of a young baby inside the tire is eye catching and hence anybody who sees it will want to know what it is all about (Moriarty, Nancy, and William 248). A person who sees the advertisement will immediately have an impression of safety while using the tires and is less likely to forget about it since the pictures used are very memorable.

Colonialism and Latin America Essay Example for Free

Colonialism and Latin America Essay Eduardo Galeano is a passionate journalist and writer, a man that has put this passion into writing about the lost or often overlooked histories of Latin and South Americas. In one of his acclaimed books, Las venas abiertas de America Latina/Open Veins of Latin America, he looks at the history of exploitation in this place from early European explorers to current United States and European endeavors. In this paper using three examples from Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano, will show how Latin America has developed a dependency on foreign entities. Latin America was mostly untouched by the European world until 1492, when the Spanish where looking for a cheaper way to obtain the goods from the Exotic East. Galeano even goes on to speculate that even earlier explorers could have visited thus creating the religions and gods that the native tribes worshipped (pg. 17). These Spanish explorers came looking for new goods and spices, and when they saw that these natives had bits of metal upon them and inquired after them discovered that gold and silver were in abundance here. Thus began the Spanish Conquistadors reign begin in Latin America, though out numbered 10 to 1, the Spanish steadily moved out. The technology gaps between these two worlds was astounding, as Columbus earlier noted, â€Å"They knew nothing of swords, and when these were shown to them they grasped the sharp edges and cut themselves. † Along with gunpowder, full metal armor, and most importantly horses the Spanish were able to decimate and terrorize most opposing forces that they encountered. â€Å"The conquests shattered the foundations of these civilizations† (pg.43), afterwards almost every major native city and been sacked and looted along with the natives being indentured or killed. The mines that were established created the greatest displacement of the native people; it forced them into grueling labor and destroyed the agricultural communities. These early conquests helped lay the groundwork for the future exploitation of this region. Gold and silver were the main motivating forces for the Conquest, but many other goods have developed within this region. Foremost of these goods was sugar, in fact it was such suitable terrain that it proved to be a â€Å"white gold. † The early sugar plantations were pure profit for the Spanish lords, with legions of African and Native slaves and soil ideal for sugar cane. This new agriculture and overseers helped contribute to the already old agriculture downfall. Forests were felled and other crops were dismissed as unnecessary, sugar became the only crop that mattered. These plantations developed into what we know today in Latin America as the latifundio, which has been meticulously honed into a system that allows for the highest profits to the owners but hardly adequate conditions for its workers. â€Å"The latifundio as we know it has been sufficiently mechanized to multiply the labor surplus, and thus enjoys an ample reserve of cheap hands. It no longer depends on the importations of African slaves or on the encomienda of Indians; it merely needs to pay ridiculously low or in-kind wages, or to obtain labor for nothing in return for the laborer’s under of a minute piece of land. † (pg. 60) This system created was so effective at siphoning the natural resources of the region that its growth into areas can be documented by the destroyed land and displaced populace that it leaves behind. Galeano states, â€Å"And this has not been the role of sugar alone: the story has been the same with cacao, cotton, rubber, coffee and fruits† (pg. 61). With the creation of this system within Latin America, it became ripe for foreign business interests to produce their product in this place. With the abundance of common resources available for cheap and with huge potential for a business owner to create huge profits, Latin America was directly and indirectly was given host to many business ventures from Dutch, French, English and U. S. industry. Businesses that invested into these ventures loved the model, land was acquired with earnest and more plantations were created with their overseers working for the new companies. Now all these companies could obtain a bulk product for little to no cost to them, and should you happen to own the transportation for bringing the product to its destination only created more. Investors grew rich and enjoyed their success at making double profits, though workers were not so happy. Unrest has become a staple of the Latin America countries, and unfortunately it is usually painted by our governments as the opposite of what is occurring. To begin most Latin American countries are under a Dictatorship, where the military has absolute power and the only thing with more influence is the businesses that want to keep their labor cheap. Foreign entities train these dictators then give them the money and goods they require to help maintain the goals that the businesses request of them. Most unrest that is documented is the people of these regions rising up against these Dictators to install someone for the people, but it usually doesn’t last long as foreign interest is already setting up the next player for their scheme. Latin America once boasted an ancient civilization with brilliant people; astronomers, builders, leaders, but now is governed by what product is most in demand. These people have had foreign parties that have been molding the way they live and function for over 500 years. Even know as we campaign to help them we can’t begin to grasp that these people need more than foreign interests to stop exploiting them, they need it to change their whole way of life. It’s a double edged sword, for there shall always be a party that enters the system that is only focused on its own needs rather than the needs of the people. The world has so deeply ingrained itself in the history and creation of the crutch that Latin America lives off of and if we should take that crutch away, they still won’t be able to walk, but if we show them how to do it on their own and let them govern themselves and teach them. Maybe they’ll be able to walk for themselves someday. Work Cited Galeano, E. H. (1997). Open veins of Latin America: five centuries of the pillage of a continent (25th anniversary ed. ). The Renaissance and Why Its Important Essays -- essays research papers

Q: What was the Renaissance and why was it important? The Renaissance was a radical and comprehensive change of thinking and lifestyle that took place in European culture during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Renaissance was the reformation of many old ideas and the formation of many new, this brought many changes to Europe such as the birth of vital subjects, such as mathematics, geometry, and algebra. As well as sciences such as chemistry and astronomy which led to technological advancements. In my essay I will explain how the flourishing culture helped to inspire new developments in art, clashing views in the Church and religion and the concept of multiculturalism which helped to inspire teaching and learning?s of a broader range subjects. Renaissance artists sought to create art and sculptures that expressed themselves on a deep and emotional level, they created art forms consistent with the appearance of the natural world and with their experience of human personality and behaviour. Renaissance artists considered perspective, or the differences in the way things look when they are close to something or far away. The artists painted in a way that showed these differences. As a result, their paintings seem to have depth and meaning. During the 15th and 16th century artists concentrated mainly on the theme of life after death. This was the result of artists who became increasingly liberated from their guilds to pursue individual carers. Renaissance artists were usually of high prominence in the modern day society. Many were hired by rich patrons to paint in their household of either family or religious themes along their walls. The idea that you hired famous artists to paint for you meant that you and your family were. .. ...h and learn off each other spread all over Europe. Thus, making Toledo a significant element in the innovation of Universities and learning during the period of the Renaissance and the modern day world. In conclusion the Renaissance is an important and significant part of life today as many concepts of learning and teaching, art and religion all contribute to modern day society. The Renaissance saw a dramatic change in people?s thinking and expressions. People felt free to think for themselves for once, rather then how they were meant to think. For example, Artists felt unconstrained to draw and paint the honesty and realism in religion. The public thought for themselves and freed themselves from the church in order to express humanism in society. Cultures and backgrounds came together to teach and learn of each other, oblivious to their race or religion.

A Martian Sends a Postcard Home

â€Å"A Martian Sends A Postcard Home† The main theme for this poem, â€Å"A Martian Sends A Postcard Home† is showing that how different people have different perspectives and different way of perceiving things. This poem shows how a Martian would describe some of our everyday thing a lot differently than we would. The Martian has a unique way of describing everyday objects, emotions, and time. The Martian sees mist as an object that has human like properties such as becoming tired. Mist is when the sky is tired of flight and rests its soft machine on ground. † (Page 867) The Martian describes mist in a completely different way from the ordinary way we think it to be. We know that it has no human properties and understand it to be something just caused by nature. The Martian, while on Earth, sees adults while they are suffering. The Martian sees them hiding their pain in a room alone, yet children openly expose their hurt. â€Å"Only the young are allowed to suf fer openly.Adults go to a punishment room with water but nothing to eat. † (Page 864) The Martian gets to see something that most adults try to mask. The Martian is able to make a distinction between the way that children and adults express themselves. The Martian seems to describe in an odd way about how humans keep their time trapped in a box and how we have it tied to our wrists. â€Å"But time is tied to the wrists or kept in a box, ticking with impatience. (Page 864) In this statement, it shows how he finds it hard to understand why we keep track of time in that way and because we keep it in that way, time begins to tick impatiently. In conclusion, the theme of this poem shows how everyday items can be described or viewed in such a different way from another perspective. Such things as objects, feelings, and time can be held in such a different viewpoint from two different people. This poem shows how point of view is used to contrast things viewed from a human vs. outsid er viewpoint.

Art During The Renaissance in Venice

Just as with Florence, Venice was a Republic during the Renaissance. Actually, Venice was an empire that controlled land in what is modern day Italy, a whole lot of sea coast down the Adriatic and countless islands. It enjoyed a stable political climate and thriving trade economy, both of which survived outbreaks of the Black Death and the fall of Constantinople (a major trading partner). Venice was, in fact, so prosperous and healthy that it took someone named Napoleon to undo its empire status... but, that was quite a while after the Renaissance had faded away and had nothing to do with art. An Economy Supporting Art and Artists The important part is, Venice (again, like Florence) had the economy to support art and artists, and did so in a big way. As a major port of trade, Venice was able to find ready markets for whatever decorative arts Venetian craftsmen could produce. The whole Republic was crawling with ceramists, glass workers, woodworkers, lace makers, and sculptors (in addition to painters), all of whom made entirely satisfactory livings. The state and religious communities of Venice sponsored massive amounts of building and decorating, not to mention public statuary. Many private residences (palaces, really) had to have grand facades on at least two sides since they can be seen from the water as well as land. To the present day, Venice is one of the most beautiful cities on earth because of this building campaign. Scuola (Schools) Artisan guilds—wood carvers, stone carvers, painters, etc.—helped ensure that artists and craftsmen were properly compensated. When we speak of the Venetian School of painting, its not just a handy descriptive phrase. There were actual schools (Scuola) and they were highly selective about who could (or couldnt) belong to each. Collectively, they guarded the Venetian art market zealously, to the point that one did not purchase paintings produced outside of the schools. It simply wasnt done. Venices geographic location made it less susceptible to outside influences—another factor which contributed to its unique artistic style. Something about the light in Venice, too, made a difference. This was an intangible variable, to be sure, but it had an enormous impact. For all of these reasons, during the Renaissance Venice gave birth to a distinct school of painting. The Key Characteristics of the Venetian School The main word here is light. Four hundred years prior to Impressionism, the Venetian painters were keenly interested in the relationship between light and color. All of their canvases clearly explore this interplay. Additionally, the Venetian painters had a distinct method of brushwork. Its rather smooth and makes for a velvety surface texture. It seems, too, that Venices geographic isolation allowed for a somewhat relaxed attitude toward the subject matter. A great deal of painting dealt with religious themes; there was no getting around that. Certain wealthy Venetian patrons, however, created quite a market for what we refer to as Venus scenes. The Venetian School had a brief fling with Mannerism, but mostly resisted depicting the contorted bodies and torturous emotion Mannerism is known for. Instead, Venetian Mannerism relied on vividly painted light and color to achieve its drama. Venice, more than any other location, helped make oil paint popular as a medium. The city is, as you know, constructed on a lagoon which makes for a built-in dampness factor. Venetian painters needed something durable! The Venetian School is not known for its frescoes, however. When did the Venetian School Arise? The Venetian School arose in the mid to late 15th century. Pioneers of the Venetian School were the Bellini and Vivarini (descendants of those marvelous Murano glassworkers) families. The Bellini were of particular importance, for it is they who are credited with bringing the Renaissance style to Venetian painting. The Important Artists The most important artists of the Venetian schools were the Bellini and Vivarini families, as mentioned. They got the ball rolling. Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506), from nearby Padua was also an influential member of the Venetian School during the 15th century. Giorgione (1477–1510) ushered in 16th century Venetian painting, and is rightly known as its first really big name. He inspired notable followers such as Titian, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Lorenzo Lotto. Additionally, a lot of famous artists traveled to Venice, drawn by its reputation, and spent time in the workshops there. Antonello da Messina, El Greco and even Albrecht Dà ¼rer—to name but a few—all studied in Venice during the 15th and 16th centuries. Sources and Further Reading Humfrey, Peter.
